(were you using 32bit, it would just be a matter of installing the deb packages.) So with 64bit, one needs to convert the 64bit rpm packages to deb packages (yes, Canon only supply printer drivers but sane seems to provide complete support so the scanner should be fine with xsane.

if 64bit I can tell you how to convert the 64bit RPM packages to debian packages to install them. the package contains debian packages and they should install fine. if you are still there, tell us if you are using 32bit or 64bit. by selecting the former (open with archive manager) you get to see the directory opened. These days though in Ubuntu, if you click to download, the system will ask if you want to open with archive manager or save. as you say, it is packaged as a tar.gz to make it more compact You need the Canon UFR driver Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V250_uk_EN.tar.gz from here
